the name of another of the three people who died, her name krystle campbell, 29 years old. her mother spoke out a little while ago in tears, saying she and her family are heart broken. we also just learned that the third person who died was a boston university graduate student. investigators here in boston say their hunt for a terrorist -- for a suspect in these terror bombings is still preliminary, and this case, they say, is wide open. >> among items partially recovered are pieces of black nylon, which could be from a backpack, and what appeared to be fragments of bbs, and nails, possibly contained in a pressure cooker device. in addition, this morning, it was determined that both of the explosives were placed in a dark colored nylon bag or backpack. the bag would have been heavy because of the components believed to be in it. >> let's bring in our chief national correspondent john king working his sources, doing serious reporting on what's going on. it's clearly a preliminary stage at its infancy. the fbi agent in charge says of this investigation. >> only a little over a day old, this i

confirmation of the name of one of the other people who died there yesterday. 29-year-old crystal campbell. she was a 2001 graduate from medford high school. her father just in the last few minutes confirming the identity of his daughter, krystle campbell. now one of the names that we know in addition to 8-year-old. the focus is about a 12-block area. what else is happening on the ground? >> i can tell you that the investigators are determined to find out who perpetrated this crime. they are focused on the victim, all 176 of them, just identifying the second of the three people who have died. i'm a few blocks from where the finish line was and we can see the s.w.a.t. vehicles. most has been cordoned off. this would normally be a bustling area, especially on a beautiful spring day like today. and many of the thousands of people who came here from nearly 100 different countries to run this marathon stay for another day. they become tourists and of course, it would normally be a day of business, not today. so many places are closed. they are painstakingly going over each and every inch that is cor

prayers are with the campbell family of medford. they're here today. their daughter crystal was always smiling. those who knew her said with her red hair and freckles and her ever-eager willingness to speak her mind, she was beautiful, sometimes she would be a little noisy. and everybody loved her for it. she would have turned 30 next month. as her mother said, through her tears, this doesn't make any sense. our prayers are with the liu family of china, who sent their daughter to b.u. so she could experience all this city has to offer. she was a 23-year-old student far from home. and in the heartache of her family and friends on both sides of a great ocean, were reminded of the humanity that we all share. our prayers are with the richard family of dorchester. to denise and the young daughter, jane. as they fight to recover. and our hearts are broken for 8-year-old martin. with his big smile and bright eyes. his last hours were as perfect as an 8-year-old boy could hope for. with his family eating ice cream at a sporting event. and we're left with two enduring images of this little boy.

and his family tonight. the second person killed has just been identified as 29-year-old krystle campbell of medford, mass. she was reportedly at the finish line as a spectator. we're still waiting on the name of the third victim. and as we wait, there are two main aspects to this story now. what happened and the investigation into what happened. we begin with that. and nbc news justice correspondent pete williams. pete, what do officials know? what are they saying? >> well, consider this interesting fact. i just talked to a person who has done a lot of bomb investigations who says that under normal conditions, it is possible to gather up 93 to 98% of the bomb devices themselves. even though they will be in little pieces and will be all bent up. most of the bombs will not be consumed by the explosion. so they're optimistic that they will have within a fairly short time here, it may take a couple of days, a pretty good idea of exactly how these devices were made. and already they say they have a rough idea of what components were used to make the bombs. unfortunately, these are very common
